+12 MURDER MYSTERY GAMES

Way out West

It is the spring of 1884. America's west coast is slowly being populated with small towns full of settlers, coming to prospect for precious metals, set up ranches and run dubious saloons. Now the railway is coming! Cactus Gulch is one such small town. Founded 20 years ago, tonight it has a festive air as the townsfolk get set to start their 20th anniversary celebrations. Plus, the railway is coming! However, all is not running smoothly. Land disputes, disreputable card games, strange folk from out of town and hostile Indians are all adding to a tense atmosphere…

Way out West lasts for about four hours and is suited to an evening. It is often played over a meal -- a finger buffet if possible to allow guests to circulate and talk in private.  PRICE £20.00 This game includes a FREE special version written for kids and younger teens.

Way out West is unlike many murder mystery games. Although the game starts with a murder, most of the characters have more important things to do than to investigate it.  And the killing may not be over - it is unlikely that everyone will survive the remainder of the evening!

Way out West is played just like a murder mystery game. You may be trying to solve the murder, but primarily you are (initially at least) concentrating on your own goals and objectives. Unlike most boxed murder mystery games, Way out West lets you decide how to achieve your goals and thwart your enemies.

"We received your game, Way Out West, and had our party last weekend. It was a huge success. Everyone went all out on their costumes and the game flowed smoothly. Thanks for your great customer service!"
Lisa and Anthony Perez, Oregon, United States

On the evening of the game the guests are met by the organizer, the Bartender of the Silver Dollar Saloon. They then receive their detailed backgrounds - including dark secrets, objectives and money. When everyone has arrived the celebrating starts, but it is immediately disrupted by a shocking announcement. The real fun then begins as everyone questions, bribes and blackmails each other. As the evening progresses they may even try to murder one another! Along the way they may solve some of Way out West's mysteries. Where is the map to the recently discovered silver lode? Who owns the land that the railways are desperate to get hold of? Why are the Indians threatening to go on the warpath? Why is a pack of cards so important? Why is the preacher so sinister? Finally, the game concludes and everyone finds out how they did, and what secrets everyone else was concealing.

Dead Man’s Chest

Two pirate crews descend upon the sleepy Caribbean island of Santo Oloroso -- to avenge the death of their former master Captain Flint, or to find and grab his treasure?

Old enmities will surface, deals will be made and broken, and some folk will swing from the yard-arm while others receive the dreaded Black Spot, before these affairs are settled, for good or ill.

Will fortune favour the brave? Will faint heart ever win fair lady? How many Pieces of Eight make a Doubloon? Find out all this and more at A Dead Man's Chest.

Hollywood Lies

It's award night and Tom Speed's latest film, Dazzled to Death, has just swept the board and garnered five Erics - for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Sadly, Tom Speed's award for Best Actor was accepted posthumously by his wife, Zara Vicars, as Tom was killed in a driving accident late last night.

Despite this note of sadness, celebrations are in full swing at the Dazzled to Death post-award party. Deals are being cut for future productions and everyone is having a good time enjoying the atmosphere and mingling with Hollywood's movers and shakers.

Is there anything suspicious about Tom Speed's death? Who will win next year's Erics? Find out at Hollywood LiesPRICE £25.00

"I just hosted Hollywood Lies for a group of teen homeschoolers this weekend. I have to say that they had a blast! Their "movies" were a hoot! This is the 3rd year in a row that we have used your games as sort of an ice breaker for the kids to get to know one another. As usual, it was a great success. Thanks again!"

"Everyone there said how much they'd enjoyed it -- we're veterans of your games, but this [Hollywood Lies] was definitely the best. There were quite a few people there who had never been to a MMP before and didn't know what to expect, but everyone had a great time. There was lots of variety in the plot and we all thought that the idea of producing scenes from films was inspired -- showing them was the highlight of the evening. Please congratulate the author!"

GAMES SUITABLE FOR AGES 12 YEARS TO ADULT

Mixing adults and kids

Most of our games can happily accommodate a mix of adults and youngsters with no need to change anything, as long as you're careful about which characters you assign to whom. We want to make sure that everyone involved can have fun, and no-one need be worried!

Running and hosting murder mystery games for kids

Kids approach and play these games in a different way to adults, and it's worth considering this when you're hosting games for them. Some of the things we take for granted when running games for adults no longer apply. Here are some guidelines that we've found valuable when hosting games for kids ourselves, which you might like to consider. You know your kids better than we do, of course, and some of this may not be necessary for them -- and some will be more true of 12-year-olds than it is of 15-year-olds, for example.

· Some of the players may not have read any of the introductory materials that you sent out to them with their invitations. You should allow plenty of time at the beginning of the game for them to get familiar with the background, rules etc.

· You should also be aware that they may be reluctant to put their hands up and ask questions if there are bits that they don't understand. Be prepared to answer queries individually -- you may need to take each of them in turn to one side and ask if there's anything they don't understand.

· Kids tend to play through these games more quickly than adults do, and also they may get bored quicker. You probably want a total time from start to finish of no longer than 3 hours. More time will be needed for the introduction, but this can be made up for by shortening the other sessions of the game. You should probably aim for not much more than 2 hours of actual play.

· A round-robin "everyone describe what they were up to" debrief may not be appropriate, if the kids are shy of standing up and speaking in front of a group. You may find it better for you as Host to talk through the important (and the fun) points of the game and let them tell their stories to their friends in small groups.

· A mix of ages may not work all that well. 12-year-olds typically play the game quite differently from 15-year-olds. And some of this older group can be very self-conscious about "getting into the game" if they're playing alongside people from outside their close friends group.

· You have to be quite careful with casting -- in particular, don't leave it to your kids to do the casting themselves without you checking it over! "Showy" characters, the main villains and so on, should only be given to kids who are self-confident enough to play up to the part. And characters who are supposed to be friends in the game are best cast with kids who are friends in real life.

· Romance is another area to be careful with. In our kids' games any romance between characters is of an innocent nature, but even so kids may be uneasy about playing "being in love" unless with their close friends and familiars.

· We had two adults assisting for A Dead Man's Chest, and we would each take the kids off to a private room and suggest things their characters could do, so that they were never stuck. (Juju Vail, London)

· Games for Under 12’s

Although we recommend looking first at the games for kids' parties, plenty of people have run the other games for their kids anyway, sometimes with a bit of adaptation!
